Embracing International Students
Global Partnerships and Innovation in UK Education
Published: 24th July 2024
Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson’s recent address at the Embassy Education Conference in London comes at a crucial time. Her clear message – that international students are not just welcome in the UK but are essential for a vibrant education system and society – could not be more timely or valuable.
International Students: A Vital Contribution
Ms. Phillipson’s message is especially pertinent given the current financial pressures on higher education institutions. I wholeheartedly welcome the Education Secretary’s recognition of international students’ contributions. The vibrancy and diversity they bring to our cities and towns, coupled with the £100,000 each international student contributes to the national economy, are invaluable. International students are at the heart of Regent Global’s education businesses. The diverse perspectives and experiences that they bring significantly enrich our institutions and communities.
Supporting International Students
In her speech, Ms. Phillipson acknowledged the challenges faced by international students who leave their homes to study in a new culture. Having left my home in Sri Lanka at 19, fleeing civil war to study chartered accountancy, I understand the leap of faith international students take. It reflects their resilience and ambition. I welcome the Government’s commitment to supporting these students through initiatives like the graduate visa, which allows them to stay and contribute post-graduation, recognising their invaluable input.
Fostering Global Partnerships
The Education Secretary also called for renewed partnerships in education, both in the UK and globally. At Regent Global, we recognise the importance of such relationships. Our partnerships with universities, from the University of Bolton to Stanford University, California, governments, and education companies are at the centre of what we do. By embracing these partnerships, we create an environment rich in innovation and growth.
Cultural Exchange and Global Understanding
I was encouraged to see Ms. Phillipson highlight the importance of the cultural exchange fostered by international students in the UK. International students build global friendships and understanding, both of which are essential for a peaceful world. Over the past years, Regent Global has sought to promote peace by bringing people from different communities together through the Global Unity Forum, fostering understanding and harmony.
Conclusion: A Vision for an Open, Global Britain
At Regent Global, we are dedicated to supporting international students, recognising their contributions, and working together to address global challenges. I am excited by the Government’s vision of an open, global Britain and look forward to our institutions being beacons of opportunity and inclusivity.
